NEW FORMAT 48 TEAMS EXPLAINED

The 2026 World Cup is the first with 48 teams, up from the 32 team format used since 1998. That single change reshaped everything: more groups, a brand new knockout round, and 40 extra matches.

The group stage

48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. Each team plays the other three in its group, exactly like before. That alone produces 72 matches between June 11 and June 27.

Who advances

This is the part people ask about. Three routes into the knockouts:

The practical effect: finishing third is no longer fatal, and a team with one win and a draw will sweat on results in other groups for days. Expect more late group stage drama, not less.

The knockout rounds

From the Round of 32 onward it is straight knockout football: Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter finals, semi finals, then the final on July 19. Draws after 90 minutes go to extra time and penalties, no replays. A team that reaches the final plays eight matches in total, one more than under the old format.

Why FIFA changed it

Officially, broader global representation, and the expansion did hand first ever qualifications to several nations. Unofficially, 40 extra matches made the global rights packages dramatically more valuable, which is part of why broadcaster deals this cycle reportedly totalled around 4 billion dollars. Where all those rights ended up, and which countries got free coverage out of it, is mapped in our broadcasters list.
